This is a collection of four of the world's most romantic love songs:

Aura Lea: Written in 1861, in the heat of the American Civil War, by composer George Poulton and lyricist WW Fosdick, this song quickly became one of the most popular tunes of the times. Through the years, the melody has been sung by leading crooners, most notably by Elvis Presley, who substituted the original lyrics about the "Maid with the Golden Hair" for his own: "Love me tender, Love me true".

Plaisir d'Amour: Jean-Paul-Égide Martini wrote this classic love song in 1784, to the words of French poet Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian. It's timeless message ("The pleasure of love lasts only a moment, the grief of love lasts a lifetime") and it's lovely, lilting melody have made it a favorite of great singers, including great opera stars and popular songsters. Elvis Presley used the melody as the basis for his song "Can't Help Falling in Love with You."

Salut d'Amour: Edward Elgar was a penniless and unknown composer in 1888 when, smitten by his love for the aristocratic Caroline Alice Roberts, he wrote this haunting melody. Over her family's stern objections, she married Elgar, who went on to be Britain's leading composer of the time, knighted for his contribution to British music.

Hayu Leilot (There were nights): This melancholy song of love and loss in the early days of Jewish settlement in Palestine was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. Though this song is little known outside of Israel today, it is one of my favorites, and I hope will become one of yours as well."
